Gold Krugerrand Design and Coin Highlights

The obverse side of the Krugerrand depicts the left-facing profile of the country's first president, Paul Kruger. It was designed by artist Otto Schultz. In fact, the name "Krugerrand" is a portmanteau of Kruger's name and the name of the South African currency, the rand. The name of the issuing country "SOUTH AFRICA" is inscribed in both English and Afrikaans along the outer rim.

On the reverse side of the coin, a native antelope species known as the springbok is pictured in running across the plains. This design was created by Coert Steynberg. The springbok divides the year-date "2022" and inscriptions below indicate the coin's 1 troy oz of fine gold weight. The edge design is reeded. The coin's dimensions measure 32.77 mm in diameter and 2.84 mm thick.

The Gold Krugerrand earned the title as the world's first modern gold bullion coin. It was specifically created with the idea of creating an export market for South African gold, which was the global leader in gold mine production at the time. During the heyday of Bond films in the U.K. during the 1970s, several of 007's enemies were known to demand payment in Gold Krugerrands!
