Fraser's famous depiction of a buffalo (also known as an American bison) graces the reverse design in exceptional detail. The buffalo faces left and stands on a rounded mound of earth, as it appeared in the Type I design of the Buffalo nickel. The mottoes "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are placed on either side of the buffalo. The issuing nation "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curls along the rim above the buffalo. The bottom rim features incuse inscriptions for the denomination "$50" and the weight and purity, "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD."
