The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is often cited as one of the most beautiful coins ever minted, in the US or anywhere else in the world. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was struck from .900 gold and contains 0.9675 troy oz of pure gold. Minted between 1907 and 1933, the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle represents the pinnacle of pre-1933 US gold coins.
After 1933, not only did the United States government stop minting gold coins, but it also effectively outlawed the private ownership of gold in general. This was accomplished through Executive Order 6102 by President Franklin Roosevelt, one of his first major actions upon taking office.
Such an action by the federal government was accepted as an emergency measure to mitigate the effects of the Great Depression. However, even after the economy recovered and after World War II ended, the abandonment of gold coin production by the Treasury Department remained in place. The US eventually ditched the gold standard (in the postwar form of the Bretton Woods agreement) altogether and would not mint another legal tender gold coin until the 1980s.
For this reason, the Saint-Gaudens double eagle is essentially the last reminder of a bygone era in history.
The Celebrated Saint-Gaudens Design
Acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was tasked with redesigning the Double Eagle and the obverse of the coin features his depiction of a striding Liberty figure holding a torch of enlightenment and olive branch of peace in her hands. Behind Liberty the dawning sun's rays illuminate the United States Capitol building. The 46 stars around the rim represent the 46 states that made up the USA in 1907 while the legend “LIBERTY” and the date are inscribed at the top and lower right, respectively.
The reverse design is filled by Saint-Gaudens' flying eagle with a rising sun in the background. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TWENTY DOLLARS” is inscribed at the top rim and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles minted after 1908 have the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed to the bottom-right of Lady Liberty. Another national motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” is written around the edge of all St. Gaudens Double Eagles.
