The US Mint started production of the 1922 Peace dollar using the same high relief design used for the 1921s. However, by January 10th, Mint officials had decided that the frequent die breakage resulting from the high relief design was intolerable, especially as it would mean constantly shipping new dies to the Mints in Denver and San Francisco. The branch mints were ordered to destroy their Peace dollar dies and await new low relief ones.
In the meantime, the approximately 35,000 high relief 1922 Peace dollars were melted down to avoid the headache of deliberately releasing a rare coin into circulation.
The Value of a 1922 Peace Dollar
51.7 million 1922 low relief Peace dollars were struck in Philadelphia, making this the highest mintage of the entire series. Prices reflect this abundant supply.
