Many 1887-S Morgan dollars entered circulation relatively soon after being minted. The rest apparently remained in San Francisco Mint vaults until they were released after WWII.
This is one mintage that was missing from the great Treasury vault disbursals on 1962-1964.
The Value of an 1887-S Morgan Dollar
The 1887-S Morgan dollar has been somewhat available in circulated grades since the date of issue. Mint State coins were exceedingly scarce until the late 1940s. Many bags came out of the San Francisco Mint over the next decade, easing the shortage of uncirculated coins.
That said, many of these coins were unable to earn high Mint State grades. This can be seen by comparing the prices of MS63 and MS65 1887-S Morgan dollars.
