The 1883-S Morgan dollar is another condition rarity. Despite a robust mintage of over 6 million, most silver dollars of this date seem to have circulated. Small quantities emerged from Treasury vaults during the great Morgan dollar disbursements of 1962–1964. It is supposed that many 1883-S Morgans ended up in melting pots to conform with the 1918 Pittman Act.

The Value of a 1883-S Morgan Dollar

The surviving 1883-S Morgan dollars kept in the vaults of the San Francisco Mint were treated roughly. Large numbers of bag marks and abrasions mean that the most common Mint State 1883-S Morgan dollars you encounter will be in the MS62-MS63 range. Otherwise, they have good strikes and nice eye appeal.

The 1883-S Morgan dollar is a date where you will need deep pockets and a will to enter a bidding war to score an uncirculated example above MS65. NGC and PCGS each list two 1883-S Morgans at MS66 and a single coin at MS67.
