The 1962-D Jefferson nickel set an all-time mintage record of 280 million coins. This record would soon be broken, as the 1964 and 1964-D Jefferson nickel mintages both exceeded one billion coins.
The Value of A 1962-D Jefferson Nickel
1962 was the start of a severe nationwide coin shortage, and production at both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints increased accordingly. The rush to coin as many nickels as possible led to worse quality at the Denver Mint than even the poor strikes of the previous few years.
Gem uncirculated pieces are far scarcer than it would be thought, and Full Steps are extremely rare.
