11.3 million Jefferson nickels were minted in San Francisco in 1948. While a little on the low side, especially compared to later dates, the 1948-S nickel is priced lower than other mintages from the 1940s.
The Value of A 1948-S Jefferson Nickel
The lower number of Jefferson nickels produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1948 seems to have allowed them to increase the quality of the strikes. Die polishing was more delicate than usual, giving many coins a pleasing luster even if the strike was not that sharp.
