As a new reverse design debuts on the Silver Eagle for the coin's 35th anniversary in 2021, collectors face a unique opportunity. The U.S. Mint will continue issuing 2021-dated ASEs with the old design for the first few months of the calendar year.

This 2021 American Silver Eagle 1 oz Coin - Brilliant Uncirculated will be the last time the original Silver Eagle reverse design, by John Mercanti, will ever be featured on an American Silver Eagle coin!

Once the initial allocation of these coins is sold to Authorized Purchasers and their distributors, no more Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles featuring the original reverse design will be released by the mint. The original design will be retired.

The weight and purity specifications for the 2021 Silver Eagle remain the same as when the coin debuted in 1986. Each Silver Eagle contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver in terms of actual silver weight (ASW). It has a legal tender face value of 1 Dollar and a silver purity of .999 fine (99.9% pure silver).

The obverse design uses the familiar image of "Walking Liberty." Lady Liberty is shown striding confidently toward the rising sun, her outstretched arm beckoning toward the dawn of a new day. Miss Liberty is draped in a flag resembling the American flag. She carries oak and laurel in her other arm. The year-date "2021" is placed at the bottom rim, while the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is found to the right of Lady Liberty.

John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design graces the reverse for the very last time in 2021. The eagle's breast is protected by a Union shield. Its talons hold arrows and an olive branch. A banner clasped in the eagle's beak reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the specifications "1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed around the outer rim. The coin's edge is reeded (serrated).
