The leaf is flanked by the purity of the coin in numeric form, 9999. Above the leaf is the inscription CANADA. Running along the bottom rim is the coin’s weight in English and French FINE GOLD 1/2 OZ OR PUR.

The coin features the traditional serrated/reeded edge, first used centuries ago to discourage the illegal practice of filing down a coin’s rim, then passing it off at full value.
