For more than three decades, the flagship gold coin of the United States Mint has been the American Gold Eagle. Offered in a variety of sizes, this famous gold bullion coin is struck from .917 fine gold and, as legal tender, is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government. Each 2018 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coin bears a face value of $10 and contains a total of one-quarter troy ounce (0.25 troy oz) of fine gold content.

The obverse uses the Saint-Gaudens design of Liberty that originally appeared on the $20 Double Eagle gold coin from 1907 to 1932. Miss Liberty is shown striding confidently forward and she carries an olive branch in one hand and a lit torch in the other. "LIBERTY" is inscribed across the top rim while an orderly ring of 50 stars encircles the design. Radiant light and the Capitol Building are visible behind Lady Liberty. The year-date "2018" is placed to her right.

On the reverse, a family of eagles designed by Miley Busiek for the U.S. Mint in 1986 is shown. The mother eagle is in the nest, protecting her two young, as the father eagle returns carrying an olive branch in his talon. The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed along the top rim. On either side of the eagles, the mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are found.
