The 2007 1 oz “1931 Matchless Silver Hawk” Colored Silver Coin is part of the five-coin “Great Motorcycles of the 1930s” series made by the New Zealand Mint for the Cook Islands. The coin is denominated in 2 Cook Islands Dollars, and is legal tender there. Made from 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver, the coin has a tread reminiscent of a motorcycle tire around the border. The reverse of the coin features a black and white 1931 Matchless Silver Hawk, with the Matchless logo underneath. It comes encapsulated on a special display card with a photo matching the illustration on the coin. There was a limit of 6,000 for each coin in this series.
The 1931 Silver Hawk was a V-4 luxury motorcycle introduced the same year as the famous Ariel Square 4. With a four-speed gearbox, Matchless claimed it was as quiet as “the most expensive motor car.”
