Both images are colorized, bringing to life these incredible wild creatures. The lion's mane and the mandrill's unbelievable red, blue, and gold markings are shown in vibrant full color. The legend ("AFRICAN LION" and "AFRICAN MANDRILL," respectively) curls along the top rim. The Discovery™ logo is found at the bottom rim.

The common obverse of the coins shows a realistic and brightly colored planet earth. A smaller circle at the bottom rim contains Raphael Maklouf's right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in front of a globe. Around the outer rim, the inscriptions for the issuing country "NIUE ISLAND," the denomination "TWO DOLLARS," the year-date "2016," the weight "1 1/2 TROY OUNCE" and the purity ".999 FINE SILVER" appear in clockwise order, each separated by a small bullet point.
