Minted between 1942 to 1945 during WWII, nickel (the metal) was so vital to the war effort, that the US government decided to use silver instead of nickel to make 5 cent coins. Thus creating the 35% silver War Nickel coin. Each war nickel contains .05626 oz on fine silver and is distinguished from regular nickels by the mint mark that is struck right above Monticello. The 35% silver war nickle has a diameter of 21.2mm and a plain edge. War nickles are sold in multiples of face value, meaning that should you purchase $1 in face value of war nickels you will receive 20 individual coins.
Both the obverse and reverse of the 35% silver nickles share Felix Schlag's award-winning design for the regular nickels that we are used to handling every day. On the obverse of the war nickel is a timeless left facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. To the right are the words "In God We Trust" along the left side of the rim and to the left is the word "liberty" and the coin's date of issue which will vary between 1942 to 1945.
On the reverse of the 35% war-time nickels is a beautiful depiction of Monticello. Right above Monticello's dome is the mint mark, this is the most important feature on the reverse, as it's what distinguishes a 35% silver nickel from a regular nickel. The word "Monticello" is struck right below the building. The motto "E Pluribus Unum" finds it home atop the top of the rim. Since this is a legal tender coin it features the Country of issue "United States of America" on the bottom and its 5 cent face value right above it.
35% silver War Nickel coins are a terrific way to purchase silver because of their low premium. Buy War Nickels today and own a piece of American history!
