Sweden is famous to most people today for Ikea, beautiful women, and refusing to make war, but the kingdom was founded from Viking ancestors and had a mighty Scandinavian Empire in the 1600s. Sweden is the largest Scandinavian country, and is the third largest nation in the European Union, but has less than 10 million people.
Sweden joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union in 1873. replacing the riksdaler with the krona. The Swedish coin is still known as the krona. Silver 1 and 2 kronor coins were introduced in the 1870s. No silver coins were minted between 1920 and 1927. The silver content in Swedish coins was reduced in 1942 as a result of World War II, and were discontinued in general circulation in 1971
